We the People Give Thanks for Freedom

We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
~ President Abraham Lincoln
National Proclamation of Prayer and Repentance, 1863

We owe humble and heartfelt thanks to the Author of all blessings.
~ Theodore Roosevelt, 1904

We should ask what we can do as individuals to demonstrate our gratitude for all He has done.
~ Ronald Reagan 1981

If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too.
~ Somerset Maugham

Thank you.

Life Lessons – Rolling with the punches

Hi Everyone

My apologies for being out of touch for so long….it’s been quite the month!

Surgeries, knee injuries resulting in physical therapy 3x/wk for two family members – yada yada…. culminating in the near death of my computer two weeks ago. I’m still in the process of getting my computer up & running, but wow, is it time consuming!

Anyhow, I just wanted everyone to know that I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth & hope to be back up to speed within the next two weeks.

Food for thought: I am planning to post a survey soon to find out if there is any interest in a forum for HTH readers. Please give it some thought and if it is of interest to you, think about what kinds of things you would like to see in the forum.

Pressing on until next time,

Sue

Homeschool on the Road of Life

Have you ever dreamed about leaving the rat-race, selling everything and traveling to wherever, meeting new people, seeing first-hand God’s wonderful creation? My husband & I have dreamed about it many times. Many times.

Years ago, after their children were grown, one of my husband’s cousins and his wife did just that. They sold everything and bought a boat. Everyone thought they were absolutely nuts (‘cept us :) ) and figured it was just a matter of time before they came to their senses. But they have never looked back and wouldn’t trade what they’re doing for anything. They have traveled all over, making money using their boat.

At this stage in our life, it’s hard to imagine that doing something that “gutsy” will ever become reality for us, but who knows?! At any rate, we still like to dream.

This morning I read a wonderful inspiring story about the Vogel family who “took the plunge.” Read the rest of this entry »

Politics and Homeschoolers

I have to be honest and say that I hate politics. I really do. It’s hard to know what or who to believe and discussion, especially about issues I am passionate about, like abortion, really upset me. But, I do believe strongly that every American citizen of voting age has the responsibility to participate in the process.

So with things heating up for November’s presidential election and all the media spin and the commercials – oi! it’s enough to drive me nuts!!! I digress – sorry. Like it or not, there is an important election around the corner.

My reason for writing this post is because of a thought-provoking article written by Mary Pride, publisher of Practical Homeschooling. In her article she discusses the issue of homeschooling and candidates’ positions on the subject. The title of her article, which may surprise you, is Huckabee Not the Best for Homeschoolers. Hmmm, Read the rest of this entry »

Freedom’s Never Free

I spent over six hours yesterday trying to get this post written, but kept running into technical glitches that I couldn’t fix :( – mainly trying to embed the YouTube video mentioned below – you’ve got to watch it! Because it’s so important, I’m going to give you the links to check out the information yourself. Please do!

Freedom’s never free; the cost is paid in blood.

Arlington Cemetary

Rest easy, sleep well my brothers.
Know the line has held, your job is done.
Rest easy, sleep well.
Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held.
Peace, peace, and farewell…

The above picture is of Arlington National Cemetery and the Wreaths Across America project started in 1992 by a company in a small Maine town. Please check out this site for more information about the project and most especially watch the stirring YouTube video found about halfway down the page. Make sure you have your sound turned on. Field Trips & High School Homeschoolers

Thinking back to your school days, some of your best memories were probably field trips. The memory was good, not necessarily because the subject was something you were interested in, but because you got out of classes for the day – Yea! – plus, it was a break for the norm. As homeschoolers, you have the advantage of doing as many field trips as you like even, during the high school years! The opportunities are virtually endless!

Living in or near a large city, presents literally countless field trip destinations. Even if you have to drive 2 hours, make a day of it and have a blast! If you can afford it, stay overnight and make it a real event! Another great option for a high school field trip is a city tour. Major cities such as Chicago, Washington D.C., New York, Boston, Nashville and Atlanta are just a few interesting choices worth considering.

Involve your high school students when planning a field trip. If the trip involves travel, Read the rest of this entry »

When Life Gets in the Way
