Recent Court Order May have Chilling Implication for Homeschoolers
Heads up, parents….
According to a February 29 article on World News Daily, a California homeschooling family has been ordered by the court to put the two youngest of their eight children into the public school or a “legally qualified” private school.
According to the article:
“the trial court had found that “keeping the children at home deprived them of situations where (1) they could interact with people outside the family, (2) there are people who could provide help if something is amiss in the children’s lives, and (3) they could develop emotionally in a broader world than the parents’ ‘cloistered’ setting.”
The court determined that homeschooling based on religious reasons was inadequate and that “California’s compulsory public school education law” did not violate first amendment rights.
The parents, Jonathan and Mary Long, plan to appeal the decision. The Homeschool Legal Defense is looking into the impact of the ruling.
Randy Thomasson, of Campaign for Children and Families, stated:
“For years the government school establishment has been lying to parents about the law. Just this week, a Los Angeles Unified school district employee lied to a mother who wanted to homeschool, telling her you must have a license, you must be credentialed and you must follow all the state curriculum . That’s three lies in one sentence.
I want to get this information out, so, for now, I am going to wrap up here. Next time, I will give some insight as to our personal experience with “the school establishment lying to parents”.
Please read the article, Judge orders homeschoolers into government education. Many homeschool parents have paved the way for us to have the freedom to educate our children at home, fighting fierce battles in the process, many making large personal sacrifices. Let us remember that and remember, that, as this ruling so clearly indicates, the battle is not over!
Pressing on,
Sue

Tammy Takahashi from the California Homeschool Network posted a message on the CHN e-mail list than none of the 3 statewide homeschool groups (CHN, HSC, & CHEA of CA) knew of this case until today. She said that the CHN legal team is reviewing the case and is working in conjunction with other homeschool organizations on the next steps. Hopefully, they’ll be able to get the decision reversed upon appeal and preserve the freedom to homeschool in CA under the private school exemption.
