Movies as Literature
Using movies for a highschool literature course can be fun! Kathryn Stout has put together a wonderful course doing just that with her Movies As Literature.
We have used several of Kathryn’s Design-A-Study products (Science Scope and History Guides Plus) and have found her products to be novel in approach, interesting and all around wonderful resources.
Movies As Literature is a complete one year English course for highschool students. The course contains a complete teacher’s manual (with answer key)
and student workbook. The student workbook portion may be purchased individually or copies may be made for use by other students within the same family.
Some of the 17 movies included for study are Arsenic & Old Lace, The Music Man, E.T., To Kill a Mockingbird and Raiders of the Lost Ark. For each unit, the student watches the movie for enjoyment and then re-watches to answer thought provoking discussion questions about the plot, literary elements, character development and more. The unit concludes with the writing of three compositions to help the student hone their writing and analytical skills.
One of Ms. Stoudt’s desires through the writing of this course is to equip the student with the ability to discern underlying messages in movies rather than simply absorb them. Given the nature of most of today’s movies, I think this is an admirable and important goal!
Sample pages of Movies As Literature are available to view online. Also, you can order just one unit for 5.00 to see how it fits for your teen. If you like it and decide to purchase the course within 30 days, the 5.00 is applied to the cost of the course. A win-win situation.
My granddaughter is currently working through Arsenic & Old Lace and I gotta tell you, we are enjoying it. We made a movie day out of it, complete with popcorn. I am looking forward to watching more of the movies with her. What a way to do highschool!
