Homeschool on the Road of Life
Have you ever dreamed about leaving the rat-race, selling everything and traveling to wherever, meeting new people, seeing first-hand God’s wonderful creation? My husband & I have dreamed about it many times. Many times.
Years ago, after their children were grown, one of my husband’s cousins and his wife did just that. They sold everything and bought a boat. Everyone thought they were absolutely nuts (’cept us
) and figured it was just a matter of time before they came to their senses. But they have never looked back and wouldn’t trade what they’re doing for anything. They have traveled all over, making money using their boat.
At this stage in our life, it’s hard to imagine that doing something that “gutsy” will ever become reality for us, but who knows?! At any rate, we still like to dream.
This morning I read a wonderful inspiring story about the Vogel family who “took the plunge.” Dad and Mom quit their jobs and together with their twin eight year old boys, they traveled the US and Mexico on bike, as in bicycle, the kind you pedal! Their journey lasted 12 months and covered 9300 miles!
The article describes some of the struggles they experienced, but emphasizes the victories and wonderful experiences they shared as a family. It talks about how they had to learn to work together as a team; how, no matter where they stopped, the boys made it an adventure using their imaginations. Never once did Mom & Dad hear “ We’re bored.”
They rode in extreme heat. They traveled and marveled at the beauty of the Pacific coast. They camped in the Grand Canyon area in 20 degree weather, quickly deciding to head south. Their journey lead them into the Baja and from there into mainland Mexico. Talk about learning through life lessons!
Each and every day was a new adventure. That year changed their lives forever and they have no intention of returning to life as they knew it. In fact, they are planning a new trip this year, traveling from Alaska to the tip of Argentina – approximately 20,000 miles!
They are documenting their journey at Family on Bikes and hope it will be used as a resource by homeschoolers to learn about their world through life’s lessons. Check it out!
Ahhh, back to my dreams…can any of you relate?

Thank you so much for writing about us! Our journey was, indeed, magical in so many ways. Our children learned more than we ever could have imagined - Mother Nature is the best teacher EVER!
All I can say is: LIVE YOUR DREAMS!! You can do it - you really can!
