Highschool Graduation Ideas for Homeschooled Graduates

Congratulations to all homeschooled graduating highschoolers!!! And, to the parents who stayed the course, hats off to you!!! I have not yet had the privilege of graduating one from high school – that will come next year, but I have already been giving thought as to how to make this milestone in their lives special.

Homeschooled highschoolers don’t typically have the “gala events” that their public schooled counter parts do (not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion) but recognizing their accomplishment and ushering them into this new chapter of life can and should be a special time and memory in their life. Here are a few of my thoughts….

The Graduation Celebration: My first thought is to ask your student how would they like to celebrate their accomplishment.

  • Would they like an intimate cookout at the house with close family and friends?
  • Would they just like to go to dinner at their favorite restaurant?
  • Would they prefer an “open house” where family and friends can drop in?
  • Would they like to get together with 2 or 3 of their closest homeschool buddies and have a combined party?

These are just a few ideas but seeing as how it’s their day getting their input is important.

Other ideas to commemorate their graduation achievement:

Put together a scrapbook of their life through graduation.

  • Digital Scrapbooks: Digital scrapbooks are done on CD which means you can make copies to give special friends and family. If you don’t have a clue how to do this, chances are really good that one of your highschooler’s friends does. Ask around -it won’t take long to find a friend who can do it. My grandson did three digital scrapbooks this year for graduating friends.
  • Traditional Scrapbooks: A traditional scrapbook can become an heirloom enjoyed for years, especially if it is made with the proper acid-free, etc. materials. If you’ve not done much scrapbooking, but would like to create this special gift for your graduate yourself, you can search online and find lots of websites to help.

A helpful resource is The Ultimate Fast Start Scrapbooking Guide, complete with video tutorials and everything else you need to create this special memento.

However, if scrapbooking is just not your thing, talk with your scrapbooking friends and hire one of them to do it for you.

  • Snapfish: Snapfish is another related but different option to the above two options. Snapfish is an online digital photography resource. You can upload photos, give your password to people you choose & they can then view photos and order what they what. Their processing prices are very competitive.

Additionally, they offer a variety of fun personalized items. For example: you can choose your photos and order a scrapbook which they will produce for you. (I recently saw one of these & was very impressed!) They also have other novelty items that you can personalize for your graduate such as coffee cups, T-shirts, jewelry, key chains and many more. You will need to set up an account – it’s free – and then you can view all the options. It’s definitely worth taking a look.

  • Charges: On a more serious note… ask influential people in your highschool graduates life to present a charge to them. People could include parents, grandparents, other relatives, family friends, pastors, anyone who has played an important role in your teen’s life.

Charges could be given at the graduation celebration and/or written out and compiled into a notebook (or included in their scrapbook). Consider taking a photo of the graduate and their special person to include with a written copy of the charge.

Leave a comment below and tell us, please!, what kinds of things has your family done to make your highschoolers gradualtion special? I know many of us would love to hear your ideas!
